How do I get rid of my dog's tear stains? Pics included?

My dog has really bad tear stains. We have tried diamond eye and that would never work because he wouldn't let us touch near his eyes. I wipe it everyday near his eyes and brown things come onto the napkin and gunk. His breed is pappion and shihtzu. I know its natural, but he has to much.

That dog is pretty darn cute!

I have had limited luck wiping my dogs eyes with a damp paper towel every day. I got some stuff from Petsmart, called Gold Medal Pets Tear Stain Remover, it's in a blue bottle. I have been using that every other day. What I like about it is that there's no rinsing. So far I have seen a slight improvement.

As a new jewelry retailer, you might be tempted to order wholesale loose cubic zirconia stones based on price alone. Unfortunately, extremely low prices can sometimes mean low quality as well. It's important to know what type of loose cubic zirconia to look for before buying wholesale. Understand the grades of quality before you place an order so you and your customers will be happy with the finished jewelry product.

How Loose Cubic Zirconia Quality is Determined

There are four main factors that help determine the quality or grade of cubic zirconia. These are carat (or carat weight), clarity, color, and cut. CZ stones are imitation diamonds or simulants and are measured in carat weight. Loose cubic zirconia stones are always heavier than real diamonds. This is because the materials that are used to create the stones are denser.

Though loose cubic zirconia stones are generally colorless, many shades of colors can be added using trace elements during the manufacturing process. These colors might include lavender, peridot, pink, violet, champagne, aqua, citrine yellow, and others. Typically, transparent cubic zirconia will be the more valuable, high-end diamond imitation. Colored CZ stones are valued according to the rarity, evenness, and tone of their colors.

Clarity, or clearness, of loose cubic zirconia is also a quality factor. The manufacturing process can sometimes cloud a stone, making visible imperfections. Just as with genuine diamonds, the clearer the stone is, the greater the value.

The cut is also very important in determining quality for loose cubic zirconia stones. Just as with diamonds, the cut reveals the stone's beauty through every facet. The facets must be even and precise to create just the right appearance. Also as with diamonds, the skill of the stone cutter makes all the difference. Stone cutters do much more than cut. They analyze the stone carefully to determine how much of the stone should be cut off to give proper clarity. Then, they take many steps to perfect their cut without taking away from the stone.

Though the Brilliant cut is the standard, there are other popular cuts such as the Trillion, Princess, and Radiant cuts. There are also a variety of shapes to give each stone its own unique personality.

CZ Stone Hardness

Loose cubic zirconia stones are harder than other gemstones, but not harder than diamonds, sapphires, rubies, or chrysoberyl. Hardness is determined by Mohs' scale of hardness. The highest grade of cubic zirconia is AAAAA, which measures 8.5 in hardness on the Mohs' scale.

Grades of White Cubic Zirconia

White cubic zirconia stones are graded for quality. These resemble genuine diamonds. They are graded as A, AAA, and AAAAA with cubic zirconia AAAAA being the highest grade. CZ AAA stones are the most popular among jewelry stores because they still offer great quality at affordable prices. Prices range from $22 upwards for beautiful jewelry pieces of this grade.

Would you buy a 6 carat emerald cut diamond with J color? It is GIA certified J.?

It is around $75,000. It has very good polish and symmetry, no flourescence, no culet. Would it show any yellow?

That's a great price for a 6 carat, emerald cut, GIA-certified, J-color loose diamond. I did a price check on http://www.diamondpriceguru.com/ (it lists the inventory of about 10 different diamond merchants, like Blue Nile, Mondera, James Allen, etc.). The closest diamond I found was a 6-carat, J, VVS1, GIA-certified, emerald cut, and it was $118,363. Do you know the clarity gade for yours? It might help you decide if the price is right.

The yellow in a J-graded diamond is usually not noticeable, especially if you mount it in a yellow-gold setting. (You might be okay with a white-gold or similar setting, but the bit of yellow is hidden better by yellow gold.)

What are the imperfections affecting diamond clarity?

A perfectly clear diamond (FL) is rare and expensive from a vast number of stones just a very small percentage are flawless, a great example can be seen in our diamond price comparison engine where you can easily notice that from our huge diamond database only a dozen are flawless (FL) diamonds and their prices are 20% higher from similar VVS loose diamonds. Most diamonds have imperfections; these flaws can be present externally as blemishes or internally as inclusions within the diamond.

 

Inclusions can be in the form of minute spots of black, white and other colors or as colored and uncolored crystals. These are usually caused due to trace minerals in the stone from which the diamond is extracted.

 

Blemishes include the presence of scratches, cracks or pits on the surface of the diamond. While minute cracks may not cause any major problems, some cracks may cause the diamond to split.

Depending upon the various imperfections diamonds have, the GIA has devised various grades for determining the degree of clarity. These grades are given to diamonds based on the number of inclusions, position on the stone, composition and size. Using a magnification of 10X, diamonds are ranked with the following grades. As the abbreviations explain the grading, FL comprises of flawless diamonds while IF comprises of diamonds that are flawless inside but have slight blemishes outside. VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds have minute inclusions that are difficult to detect even by experienced graders. VS1 and VS2 diamonds have minute inclusions too while SI1 and SI2 have noticeable inclusions. Finally the I1, I2 and I3 diamonds are those which have imperfections that can affect the brilliance and transparency of diamonds.

Modes for enhancing a diamond's clarity

Today various technologies have evolved for enhancing the clarity of diamonds. One example is laser drilling where lasers are used to drill out the internal spots and acid is used to wash them out. Cracks on diamonds can also be filled easily, but the treatments are considered temporary in nature. Ask for certification and if the details state that a diamond is ‘enhanced' then be sure to compare the price. Enhanced diamonds are treated diamonds and as a customer you have the right to ask which treatments have gone into enhancing the stone, for further info refer to our Diamond Enhancements article.

 

What diamonds buyers must look for!

A perfectly clear loose diamond is not only beautiful but highly expensive when buying. Moreover, in an era where synthetic diamonds are in fashion, imperfections only go on to tell that the diamond is original. While perfect clarity is not the main criteria to look for while buying diamonds, buyers must keep the following issues about diamond clarity in mind while purchasing.

Type of flaw: A large visible crack may cause the diamond to break and must be avoided. Similarly a large blemish may also cause the stone to look dull and lifeless. Consider the kind of flaw your diamond has before purchasing one. Ask for certified diamonds such as GIA certified diamonds or EGL certified diamonds.

Location of flaw: Consider where the flaw is located and how it affects the appearance of a diamond. Flaws are visible only when diamonds are put in a particular position and one must avoid that while setting the diamond in jewelry.  
Size of the flaw: Look for a diamond that appears clean to normal viewing. If the flaw is of a bigger size, it would be visible to the naked eye. Trends indicate that most diamond buyers opt for stones with VS1 and VS2 grading over perfectly flawless stones.

Number of flaws: Finally if a stone has a large number of flaws, it would reduce the brilliance. Thus look for a diamond with fewer flaws so the brilliance of the diamond can be appreciated.

Diamonds dug out of mines surprisingly, only 20% have clarity suitable for usage in jewelry. The rest 80% diamonds are put to industrial usage. Among the 20%, many have visible inclusions and very few are flawless. How ever negative the term inclusions or flaws may sound, they do have benefits. The price difference between a flawless stone and a VS stone is enormous and thus by buying a beautiful diamond that has slight inclusions that the naked eye cannot notice you save big. As a status symbol big diamonds have no equal.  It shows that you have the ability to spend an extravagant amount of money on jewelry.  When not being displayed these beautiful gems are hidden away in secure locations and rarely see the light of day.  When was the last time you have seen the Esther Williams famous Champagne diamond ring or the Taylor Burton pear shaped diamond?

Finding a good jeweler is the first step you need to take when purchasing any jewelry item.  It is also necessary to do some research on the grading system of diamonds.  Many good article are available on the internet to assist you in understanding the 4 C's of diamond grading.  After you have learned the fundamentals your jeweler can clarify your understanding.

The American Gem Society (AGS), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) are the three most widely known and respected diamond grading laboratories in the world and each of them has developed a very similar nomenclature for identifying the 4 C's of diamonds.  The 4 C's stand for Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut and I like to add shape to the 4 C's list.

The first of the 4 C's is the Carat.  A carat is 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams and is always referenced within 2 decimal points. For example the the Golden Jubilee is considered the largest faceted diamond in the world and weighs in at 545.67 carts.  The Taylor-Burton diamond is 69.42 carats.  This is a highly accurate grading scale used to determine the weight or size of a diamond but it does not apply a value to the diamond.

Color Grading

The next thing you need to look at when purchasing a diamond is the color of the diamond.  A white diamond is not white but clear in color.  Different colors in diamonds are produced because of impurities trapped in the diamond during the formation process.  Since nature rarely create anything pure many diamond will have show some color to the naked eye.  Color range from totally colorless (D) to a pale color (Z).  Diamonds of a higher grade than (Z) fall into the fancy color diamond range.  A diamond with a color range greater that (K) usually have a descriptive phrase such as grade (M) Faint Brown.

White diamonds are usually more expensive because of their rarity, D through F, but some diamonds in the fancy color range can command a very high per-caret price.  Pink diamonds have sold for up to $1,000,000 a carat.  The largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond is the The Steinmetz Pink Diamond and is 59.60 carats in weight.

Clarity Grading is the third factor in determining the quality of a diamond.  This grading requires education and years of practice for a gemologists to master.  The number and nature of the defects in a diamond is taken into account when applying the clarity grading code.  Basically the diamond is looked at with the naked eye and under a 10X magnification lens.

Internally Flawless (I.F) when it presents no internal defects under 10x magnification.

Very slightly included (V.V.S.1 to V.V.S.2) when it presents defects that are very difficult to locate under 10x magnification.

Slightly Included (S.I.1 to S.I.2) when it presents defects that are easy to locate under 10x magnification.

Imperfect (P.1 to I.1) when it presents defects that are hard to locate with the naked eye.

Imperfect (P.2 to I.2) when it presents defects that are easy to locate with the naked eye.

Imperfect (P.3 to I.3) when it presents defects that are very easy to locate with the naked eye.

Next is the cut of the diamond and the cut has nothing to do with the shape of the diamond.  The proportions and symmetry of the diamond cut determines the light dispersion, brilliance or life of the diamond.  If the diamond's reflective qualities are below standard then the appearance of the diamond will be adversely affected.  Many of the diamond cut over a couple hundred years ago were cut to maximize the carat weight with little regard to the diamond's reflective qualities.  Many of the older stones have been recut to increase its brilliance.  A good cut give the diamond it brilliance or the ability to handle light in a pleasing fashion.  The brightness will seem to come from the very heart of a diamond.

 American Star
 

In 2001 the EightStar company of California wanted to prove that optical perfection of the round brilliant diamonds could be obtained by using an exclusive light-tracking instrument called a FireScope which allows a diamond cutter to align facets so precisely that the flow of light into and out of a diamonds can be completely controlled.  The American Star as slowly cut from 14.89 to 13.42 carats over a six-week period.  Cutting the diamond for maximum light output and not size increased the beauty of the American Star and many of the older diamonds have gone through a recut.

There are several standard categories for the shape of the diamond but there are many variations on each standard categories.  Basic categories include Round, Emerald, Pear, Heart, Marquise, Oval, and Princess cuts.

The final shape of the raw diamond us usually determined by the imperfections found in the diamond.  Many imperfectsions can be remove or hidden by and experienced jeweler in mounting the diamond in the final jewelry piece and by the proper cut of the diamond.
