For many centuries diamonds have been a symbol of everlasting love and commitment between two people. They have been the most sought after and fought over gems in history. Before the industrial revolution that made large diamond mines possible, diamonds were incredibly rare even among the wealthy. Today, diamonds are a multi-billion dollar industry and their trade is a highly regulated and standardized enterprise. A diamond's value is determined by four different aspects of quality, known as "the four C's". These are: carat, clarity, color and cut.
Carat
A diamond's size is measured in carats. The bigger the diamond, the more the diamond is worth. Larger diamonds, with large carat weights, are much rarer, but size is only one aspect of quality. Certainly larger stones, in general terms, tend to be more expensive than smaller ones and there is a steep price increase when a carat hits the 1 carat mark. A carat is roughly .5 grams.
Clarity
Clarity, in diamonds, refers to the prevalence of imperfections within the stone. Every precious gem has imperfections inside, known as inclusions. The more inclusions a diamond has, the lesser its clarity grade is. The highest clarity grade is IF and the lowest is I3. There are 8 grades in between. At the higher end of the scale, the differences are minimal; towards the bottom, however, inclusions in a diamond are visible on to the naked eye. Diamonds with visible inclusions should be avoided.Â
Color
Diamonds, like other gems, come in various colorations. Few of them are perfectly clear. The highest color grade for diamonds is D, which is a near perfect, clear white diamond, and it goes all the way down, alphabetically, to Z. After H, diamonds start acquiring a hit of yellow. Pink diamonds are a different thing altogether, however. They are rare, only found in certain parts of the world, and can be very valuable.
Cut
A diamond's cut can be a huge determinant in its value, and it is one value largely determined by personal choice. Diamonds cut by master diamond cutters are priced higher. A well cut diamond will refract light better and give the stone a brighter, sparkling quality. Some of the common diamond cut types include emerald, heart, marquee, oval, pear, princess, radiant and round. Of these, the "round" shape is the most popular, as it was developed specifically to maximize light reflection.
